Tabernash, Colorado

Tabernash is a very small village with a great name that is fun to say.

It was named for a Ute Indian who was murdered by a white man.    A group of Utes were unhappy that a rancher had put up a fence to keep Utes out of their hunting area.  They protested.  A posse arrived.  The Utes were getting on their horses to leave when a hot-tempered member of the posse shot a Ute named Tabernash.    The Utes demanded the shooter be turned over to them for punishment, but the sheriff would not allow that.    The Utes left, but encountered an innocent rancher near Hot Sulphur Springs and killed him as retribution.   This incident contributed to the bad blood and the Meeker Massacre soon after.   A railroad engineer named a train stop after Tabernash when the railroad was later built in the area.

Stop by this restaurant in Tabernash.  It smells great!
