July 31 is “Black Tot Day” in the
U.K., commemorating the 1970 rule that abolished the
British Navy's daily ration of rum for sailors. The ration was referred to as a
“daily tot” and dwindled from half a pint twice a day when it was originally
introduced in 1655 to 70 milliliters once per day at the time it was abolished.
