Today, September 11, is the anniversary of the end of The
Great Siege of Malta—one of the most historic and iconic sieges in European
history.
Approximately 6,000 Christian soldiers comprised of Maltese,
Italians, Spanish, French, Germans, Greeks, and a single Englishman, led by
Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette, withstood a four-month siege at the
hands of 48,000 Muslim Ottomans.
After 130,000 cannonballs and approximately 30-35,000 Turkish
deaths, the Ottomans finally gave up and abandoned the siege on 11 September
1565.
