Muddy
Creek follows US 40 to Steamboat Springs and becomes Muddy Pass and then Rabbit Ears
Pass at the top of the Continental Divide.
Capt
John Fremont led his men over Muddy Pass on
his return expedition to California.
They encountered over 200 Arapahoe Indians from the western slope armed
for war against the local Utes of the eastern slope. Thankfully, a parley ended in a truce when
Fremont planted a US flag between the Indians and soldiers.
As you can see, it does get muddy up on the summit. You
can see the tracks from numerous snowmobiles in the area. There is not much snow left to play on.
