As you leave Granby and before you get to Hot Sulphur Springs, you drive by the reservoir of Windy Gap. In 1981, workers
on a water project there discovered remains of mud and clay structures that
were over 8,000 years old which makes them older than the pyramids of Egypt. Amazing. Too bad there is no historical signs there. So, drive on to Hot Sulphur Springs.
The small town of Hot
Sulphur Springs is the capital for Grand County.
The
Utes favored the hot springs located in the area. In 1860, white men discovered the springs and
built a spa. The called the place Grand
City, but it became Hot Sulphur Springs.
The owner of the Rocky Mountain News and a major land owner, William
Byers, bought the springs. Nearby is
beautiful Byers Canyon.
The
Spa has had some renovations and some growth since my last visit 10 years ago while fishing in the area.
The
Riverside Hotel and Restaurant appears to have gone bust since my last visit.
The
Ute Trail Motel is still in business with its iconic sign, but it is looking pretty shabby.
