I.H.S.

Especially known for his devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, Bernardine devised a symbol—IHS, the first three letters of the name of Jesus in Greek, in Gothic letters on a blazing sun.
When he preached, Bernardine stood with a wooden tablet of his own design that bore the letters I.H.S. set in the middle of a blazing sun.
The Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus is January 3.   The National Association of the Holy Name Society @ http://nahns.com/index.htm

St. Bernadine of Sienna

In 1400, during a raging plague, Bernadine and a group of young men arrived at a hospital that was housing patients infected with the plague. Bernadine wished only to care for the patients, and asked for nothing in return. He and his companions worked tirelessly to comfort the sick, as well as tend to the needs of the hospital. When he was not caring for the sick, he devoted his time to prayer and fasting.

In 1403 after much discernment, Bernadine joined the Franciscans and was ordained a priest. Bernadine spent his last days preaching to the crowds, and died in 1444.

He is most noted for spreading devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus.

St. Bernadine's feast day is celebrated on May 20th.
