April 25: Saint of the Day - St. Mark


April 25   Saint Mark – Evangelist

A disciple of Jesus but not one of the 12 apostles.

May be the naked man who ran away in the Garden of Olives as described only in Mark’s Gospel.

Preached at Cyprus and in Alexandria, Egypt where he founded the first Christian an church and was martyred by being tied up and dragged through the city

Patron saint of Venice where his remains are in the basilica next to St. Mark’s Square.

His attribute is the winged lion “crying out in the desert” in reference to St. John the Baptist.

Invoked for successful harvests and against scabies.

Protector of notaries, opticians, glaziers, breeders, pharmacists, paints, shoemakers, tanners, secretaries, and translators.

The name “Mark” is of Latin origin and was derived from the name of the god of war Mars.
