On 14
August, 800 men of Otranto, Italy were led outside their city and beheaded by
Muslims from Turkey in a massacre. Their remains were later collected and are
to this day kept in the Cathedral of Otranto.
In April, the pope called for an Italian crusade to liberate the
city. Christians from throughout Europe heeded the call.
In May, Christian forces besieged Otranto. The Muslims
surrendered in August and left Otranto in September, ending the 13-month
occupation. This was the one and only time in history the Turks ever briefly
gained a foothold on the Italian peninsula; their plan to take Italy was
aborted and all subsequent Turkish attempts ended in failure.
This
massacre happened in 1481, and this crusade to liberate Otranto happened in
1482. But, most Christians have gotten this part of Islam’s history
of conquest.
Today, the
Muslims have returned thanks to a generous immigration policy and are now
taking over Italy just as they are turning the rest of Europe into a Muslim
Caliphate.
