Te Deum - Chant of the Day

The Te Deum is a traditional hymn of thanksgiving and joy.
Participating in a public recitation of it today - last day of the year - has the possibility of gaining a plenary indulgence. (Usual conditions apply.)

Te Deum - 5th Century Monastic Chant (Solemn)

Monks of the one of the Abbeys of the Solesmes Congregation sing this beautiful chant. The Te Deum is attributed to two Fathers and Doctors of the Church, St. Ambrose and St. Augustine and is one the most majestic chants in the Liturgy of the Church. It is sung in traditional seminaries and monastic houses at the Divine Office and for Double feasts of the First Class, The Nativity, Easter, Corpus Christi, Epiphany, Pentecost and those which have an Octave. The solemn Te Deum is sung on all occasions of public Church rejoicing (in Traditional Catholic Churches)

English translation:
O God, we praise Thee, and acknowledge Thee to be the supreme Lord.
Everlasting Father, all the earth worships Thee.
All the Angels, the heavens and all angelic powers,
All the Cherubim and Seraphim, continuously cry to Thee:
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts!
Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty of Thy glory.
The glorious choir of the Apostles,
The wonderful company of Prophets,
The white-robed army of Martyrs, praise Thee.
Holy Church throughout the world acknowledges Thee:
The Father of infinite Majesty;
Thy adorable, true and only Son;
Also the Holy Spirit, the Comforter.
O Christ, Thou art the King of glory!
Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father.
When Thou tookest it upon Thyself to deliver man,
Thou didst not disdain the Virgin's womb.
Having overcome the sting of death, Thou opened the Kingdom of Heaven to all
believers.
Thou sitest at the right hand of God in the glory of the Father.
We believe that Thou willst come to be our Judge.
We, therefore, beg Thee to help Thy servants whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy
Precious Blood.
Let them be numbered with Thy Saints in everlasting glory.
V. Save Thy people, O Lord, and bless Thy inheritance!
R. Govern them, and raise them up forever.
V. Every day we thank Thee.
R. And we praise Thy Name forever, yes, forever and ever.
V. O Lord, deign to keep us from sin this day.
R. Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.

V. Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, for we have hoped in Thee.
R. O Lord, in Thee I have put my trust; let me never be put to shame.

Why you should drink Scotch, Ouzo, and Vodka today!

Today is the Feast of St. Andrew who is the patron saint of Scotland, Greece, and Russia.

To honor St. Andrew, you should drink scotch, Ouzo, and/or vodka.

An old tradition is to say this pray 15 times a day until Christmas.  However, you might just want to say it before each drink you enjoy during Advent.

St. Andrew Advent Prayer (pray 15 times a day until Christmas)
Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in piercing cold. In that hour, vouchsafe, O my God! to hear my prayer and grant my desires, through the merits of Our Saviour Jesus Christ, and of His Blessed Mother. Amen.

Coventry Carol

Today is Childermas, the Feast of the Holy Innocents.

Coventry Carol:

The “Coventry Carol”, a lullaby of mothers to doomed children, dates to the 16th century. It was part of a Mystery Play, “The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors”, about chapter two of the Gospel of Matthew.  The carol is about the Massacre of the Holy Innocents. The carol came to greater popularity after the BBC broadcast it at Christmas of 1940, after the Bombing of Coventry: it was sung in the ruins of the bombed Cathedral.

Lully, lulla, thou little tiny child,
By by, lully lullay, thou little tiny child,
By by, lully lullay.
O sisters too, How may we do
For to preserve this day
This poor youngling,
For whom we do sing,
By by, lully lullay?
Lully, lulla, thou little tiny child,
By by, lully lullay, thou little tiny child,
By by, lully lullay.
Herod, the King, In his raging,
Charged he hath this day
His men of might,
In his own sight,
All young children to slay.
Lully, lulla, thou little tiny child,
By by, lully lullay, thou little tiny child,
By by, lully lullay.
That woe is me, Poor child for thee!
And ever morn and day,
For thy parting
Nor say nor sing
By by, lully lullay!

Canterbury, England

Today is the fifth day in the octave of Christmas.   Today, the Church celebrates the optional memorial of St. Thomas Becket, bishop and martyr. He was born in London and after studying in Paris, he first became chancellor to the king and then in 1162 was chosen Archbishop of Canterbury. He went from being "a patron of play-actors and a follower of hounds" to being a "shepherd of souls." He absorbed himself in the duties of his new office, defending the rights of the Church against Henry II. This prompted the king to exile him to France for six years. After returning to his homeland he endured many trials and was murdered by agents of the king.

Why you should drink St. Germain Elderflower today

As you know, today is the Feast of the Holy Innocents where we honor those children under the age of two who were murdered by King Herod when he heard from the Magi that a Messiah had been born in Bethlehem.

These children are called “flores martyrum” – the “flowers of the martyrs.”    St. Augustine would later call them “the first buds of the Church killed by the frost of persecution.”

Today’s mass in their honor used to be called Childermas.    In some religious communities, the youngest members are fed baby food such as hot cereal for dinner.  In some Catholic countries, children used to be given a gentle spanking from their parents to remind them of the sufferings of the Holy Innocents.

Tonight, have a floral-themed cocktail.   We suggest that you use St. Germain Elderflower liquor or a cocktail with passionflower syrup.

Give me that old time religion

Why is she crying?

Watch this scene from Christmas Holiday, a 1944 Universal Pictures film starring Deanna Durbin.

In this Solemn High Mass scene, we are treated to snippets from a real Midnight Mass celebrated at the former Cathedral of Saint Vibiana, the mother church cathedral parish of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles built in 1876.  Sadly, the cathedral has since been taken over by the city and is now used as event space.

Deanna Durbin is not crying because she is bored with this long Mass in Latin.   She is crying because she is a bad girl who is sorry for her sinful ways and seeks to change her life.   But does she?  You will have to watch the movie if you can find it on Netflix.

Patron Saint of Iceland - St. Thor - Really?

You’ve probably never heard of St. Thorlak Thorhallsson, but I already know what you're thinking: This is the perfect middle name. Think about how that would sound when yelling at your kid: "Gabriel Thorlak Peterson, get your butt over here right this second!" But seriously though, he sounds like a cool guy (I mean, do you know anyone else who has “Thor” in their name twice), but who is he, and why’s he a saint? The first question is easy: he’s the patron saint of Iceland.

When Thorlak was born in 1133 AD, the Catholic priests weren’t all living out their vows. As educated men, they held positions of power, and they often sold positions in the Church; many of them were also married. Basically, they figured they were so far off from the rest of the Church in Europe that they could do whatever they wanted and just take it easy. But God had other ideas.

Thorlak didn’t waste any time finding his vocation. We know because he was ordained a deacon at age 15. And a priest at 18. He left Iceland at age 20 to study in Paris and England, and returned when he was 28, bringing some spiritual order back with him.
Of course, he was an educated man who’d traveled the world, so naturally the first thing people tried to do when he got back was to marry him off to a rich widow. He would have fit it with many of the other priests, and it would surely have made them feel more comfortable about their own vices if he’d bowed to peer pressure and married Ingeborg. (No idea if that was her name.)

Thorlak had none of it. A devotee of the Augustinian Rule, he remained a celibate priest and founded a monastery in southern Iceland. Basically, he was the only one really crushing it at being a priest. The only one in the whole country.
He was doing such a good job at it that the Norwegian Archbishop consecrated Thorlak as Bishop and gave him the job of getting the rest of the Icelandic Catholics back in line. Despite his love for the monastic life, he was an active bishop for the rest of his days. He died on December 23, 1193, at age 60.

Sadly, Iceland later outlawed Catholicism during the Reformation, and the Lutheran Church of Iceland became the official religion. No Catholic priest was allowed in Iceland for centuries, until the mid-1800s. But there were so many miracles attributed to the holy bishop Thorlak, and the Lutherans kinda couldn’t get rid of him. Also, the Saga of Saint Thorlak was written in his honor. People remembered him.

Even before canonization, he was also regarded as a saint in England, although only locally, in the area where he'd studied. There was even a statue of him in a church in King's Lynn. When a visiting cleric asked who the heck that statue was of, he was told it was St. Thorlak of Iceland. Apparently this monk didn't think much of Icelanders, who on mainland Europe were referred to as morlandar,"sheep-suet-landers," because they ate a lot of sheep and suet sausage.

Why you should eat rotten shark and drink Brennivin today

December 23, St. Thorlak’s feast day, was also the last day of the old Catholic fast before Christmas, when people usually ate fermented skate to end the fasting (chased with a shot of Brennivin, of course--that’s Iceland’s signature liquor). But even after Catholicism was outlawed, people still celebrated his feast day, and they still celebrate it today.

It’s just like drinking Guinness on St. Patrick’s Day. Except, Iceland. And rotten shark.

Because of Iceland’s strange combination of volcanic activity and ancient glaciers, people often say, “God hasn’t finished making Iceland,” and that’s definitely true for the spirituality of Iceland as well. Let’s pray for St. Thorlak’s intercession for his country.

And let’s also pray that, whether or not we end up getting sagas or feast days with strange menus, we’ll always have the same commitment and courage as Iceland’s original saint.

Song of the Day

O come, King of the Gentiles and their desired One, the Cornerstone that makes both one; Come, and deliver man, whom You formed out of the dust of the earth.

Rejoice !  Rejoice!  Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel!

Veni, Veni, Emmanuel by L'Accorche-Choeur, Ensemble vocal Fribourg:

Veni, Veni Emmanuel is a synthesis of the great "O Antiphons" that are used for Vespers during the octave before Christmas (Dec. 17-23).

These antiphons are of ancient origin and date back to at least the ninth century.

Why you should sing the Stabat Mater today

"Stabat Mater" hymn is based upon the "Dolorosa" poem written by Blessed Jacomo da Todi which depicts the suffering of Mary, Jesus Christ's mother, during his crucifixion. Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was given a commission, to compose "Stabat Mater" in 1734, but was gravely ill at the time, and completed it just before he died at the age of 26 . Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote: "The first movement of the Stabat Mater is the most perfect and most moving that has ever issued from the pen of any composer."
Stabat Mater Dolorosa by Perglosi – written by Blessed Jacomo Benedetti of Todi, Italy(Feast Day – December 22)

Stabat mater dolorosa
juxta Crucem lacrimosa,
dum pendebat Filius.

At the Cross her station keeping,
stood the mournful Mother weeping,
close to her son to the last.

About the Composer . . .
Blessed Jacomo da Todi, or James, was born a noble member of the Benedetti family in the northern Italian city of Todi. He became a successful lawyer and married a pious, generous lady named Vanna.

His young wife took it upon herself to do penance for the worldly excesses of her husband. One day Vanna, at the insistence of Jacomo, attended a public tournament. She was sitting in the stands with the other noble ladies when the stands collapsed. Vanna was killed. Her shaken husband was even more disturbed when he realized that the penitential girdle she wore was for his sinfulness. On the spot, he vowed to radically change his life.

He divided his possessions among the poor and entered the Secular Franciscan Order (once known as the Third Order). Often dressed in penitential rags, he was mocked as a fool and called Jacopone, or "Crazy Jim," by his former associates. The name became dear to him.

After 10 years of such humiliation, Jacopone asked to be a member of the Order of Friars Minor(First Order). Because of his reputation, his request was initially refused. He composed a beautiful poem on the vanities of the world, an act that eventually led to his admission into the Order in 1278. He continued to lead a life of strict penance, declining to be ordained a priest. Meanwhile he was writing popular hymns in the vernacular.

Jacopone suddenly found himself a leader in a disturbing religious movement among the Franciscans. The Spirituals, as they were called, wanted a return to the strict poverty of Francis. They had on their side two cardinals of the Church and Pope Celestine V. These two cardinals, though, opposed Celestine’s successor, Boniface VIII. At the age of 68, Jacopone was excommunicated and imprisoned. Although he acknowledged his mistake, Jacopone was not absolved and released until Benedict XI became pope five years later. He had accepted his imprisonment as penance. He spent the final three years of his life more spiritual than ever, weeping "because Love is not loved." During this time he wrote the famous Latin hymn, Stabat Mater.

On Christmas Eve in 1306 Jacopone felt that his end was near. He was in a convent of the Poor Clares with his friend, Blessed John of La Verna. Like Francis, Jacopone welcomed "Sister Death" with one of his favorite songs. It is said that he finished the song and died as the priest intoned the Gloria from the midnight Mass at Christmas. From the time of his death, Brother Jacopone has been venerated as a saint.

Comment:
“Crazy Jim,” his contemporaries called Jacopone. We might well echo their taunt, for what else can you say about a man who broke into song in the midst of all his troubles? We still sing Jacopone’s saddest song, the Stabat Mater, but we Christians claim another song as our own, even when the daily headlines resound with discordant notes. Jacopone’s whole life rang our song out: “Alleluia!” May he inspire us to keep singing.

How Thor's Human Sacrifice Tree became our Christmas Tree

Around the year 723, (Saint) Boniface was traveling with a small party in the region of Lower Hesse. He knew of a community of heathens near Geismar who, in the middle of winter, would make a human sacrifice (a child, typically) to the thunder-god Thor (yes, THAT Thor) at the base of their sacred oak tree, the “Thunder Oak”. Boniface, in part from advice from a brother bishop, wished to destroy the Thunder Oak to not only save the life of the human sacrifice, but also to show the heathens that he would not be struck down by lightning at the hands of Thor.
As the story goes, Boniface and his companions, reaching the village on Christmas Eve, arrived at the place of the sacrifice in time enough to interrupt it. With his bishops’ staff (crozier) in hand, Boniface approached the pagan crowd, who had surrounded the base of the Thunder Oak, saying to his group, “Here is the Thunder Oak, and here the cross of Christ shall break the hammer of the false god, Thor.”
With a small child laid out for the sacrifice, the executioner raised his hammer high. But on the downswing, Boniface extended his crozier to block the blow, miraculously breaking the great stone hammer and saving the child’s life.
Afterward, Boniface is said to have proclaimed to the people:
Hearken, sons of the forest! No blood shall flow this night save that which pity has drawn from a mother’s breast. For this is the birth-night of the Christ, the son of the Almighty, the Savior of mankind. Fairer is He than Baldur the Beautiful, greater than Odin the Wise, kinder than Freya the Good. Since He has come sacrifice is ended. The dark, Thor, on whom you have vainly called, is dead. Deep in the shades of Niffelheim he is lost forever. And now on this Christ-night you shall begin to live. This blood-tree shall darken your land no more. In the name of the Lord, I will destroy it. (2)
Boniface picked up an axe nearby and, as legend has it, took one mighty swing at the oak when a great gust of wind arose through the forest and felled the tree, roots and all. It lie on the forest floor, broken in four pieces. Though afterwards Boniface had a chapel built from the wood, our story takes us to what stood immediately beyond the ruins of the mighty tree.
The “Apostle of Germany” continued to preach to the astounded Germanic peoples, who were in disbelief that this slayer of Thor’s Thunder Oak had not been struck down by their god. Boniface looked beyond where the oak lay, pointing to a small, unassuming fir tree, saying:
This little tree, a young child of the forest, shall be your holy tree tonight. It is the wood of peace… It is the sign of an endless life, for its leaves are ever green. See how it points upward to heaven. Let this be called the tree of the Christ-child; gather about it, not in the wild wood, but in your own homes; there it will shelter no deeds of blood, but loving gifts and rites of kindness. (3)
And so, the Germans began a new tradition that night, one that stretches to the present day. By bringing a fir into their homes, decorating it with candles and ornaments, and celebrating the birth of a Savior, the Apostle of Germany and his flock gave us what we now know as the Christmas tree.

Saint of the day:  ST. LUCY / LUCIA OF SYRACUSE

St. Lucia of Syracuse (283–304) was born to a wealthy Christian family. Her father died when she was an infant. At a young age she secretly consecrated her virginity to Christ. Her mother pressured her into an arranged marriage with a pagan, which Lucy avoided. Her mother was struck with a long illness, and received a cure only after going with Lucy to pray at the tomb of St. Agatha. It was then that Lucy told her mother of her vow, gaining her mother's consent. However, upon finding that Lucy was a Christian, the man whom she was to marry had her imprisoned under the persecutions of Diocletian. The judge sentenced her to a brothel, but God rendered her body immovable. They tried to set her on fire, but the wood would not burn. Finally, she was killed by the sword. Among her tortures her eyes were gouged out, making St. Lucy the patron saint of eye problems and blind people, among others. St. Lucy is among the greatest of the virgin martyrs and her name appears in the Canon of the Mass. St. Lucy's feast day is December 13th.

History of the Pardon Crucifix

The History of the Pardon Crucifix
“The Pardon Crucifix was introduced at the Marian Congress of Rome in 1904, with the support of his Eminence Cardinal Coullié, Archbishop of Lyon. It was through the discourse made to him by the Frs Lémann that the crucifix obtained general approval. The project of a union around this Pardon Crucifix was presented to His Holiness by the most Eminent Cardinal Vivès, president of the Congress.
“The historic and sacred inscription of the royalty of Jesus appears in inscription placed over the head of Christ [on this crucifix]. It is an irrefutable witness against the denials and audacity of impiety. There is preserved at Rome, in the Basilica of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem, the actual inscription of Golgotha recovered by St Helen. The written relic is not complete; there may have been a division, and also age has considerably reduced it. Two words, only two words shine forth, respected by time, Nazarenus Re, The Nazarene King. It is a prophecy written on wood: all royalties are passing, except that of the Nazarene.
“On the reverse of the cross, at the center, the Sacred Heart shines forth with two inscriptions recalling the tender mercy of the Saviour; one is a prayer of pardon, breathed forth in the agony of Calvary: Father, forgive them; the other is the prayer of love breathed forth against ingratitude, in the sanctuary of Paray-le-Monial: Behold this Heart which has thus loved men.
“Below, the figure of Our Lady surmounted by a star occupies the foot of the cross, which is truly the place of Mary. She stands there to say to every straying soul: ‘Do not forget the sorrows of your Mother’. She says, ‘I am the comforter’. Despair murmurs that it is too late; She says: ‘between late and too late there is an abyss, behold all the Blood of My Jesus, behold My motherly devotion for you’.”

READ SLOWLY!

4 simple sentences

Great summary by a Notre Dame University engineer.........

Here are the 10,535 pages of Obama Care condensed to 4 simple sentences..

As humorous as it sounds.....every last word is absolutely TRUE!

1. In order to insure the uninsured, we first have to un-insure the insured.
2. Next, we require the newly un-insured to be re-insured.
3. To  re-insure the newly un-insured, they are required to pay extra charges to be re-insured.
4. The extra charges are required so that the original insured, who became un-insured, and then became re-insured,
can pay enough extra so that the original un-insured can be insured, so it will be ‘free-of-charge’ to them.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is called "redistribution of wealth" or, by its more common name, SOCIALISM, or “PROGRESSIVE”, the politically correct names for COMMUNISM !

Wow! What a brilliant way to raise money to fund a free service. Aren’t we lucky to have such a brilliant man leading us!

Right vs Left

Today, it is impossible for the narrative of the left and the narrative of the right to coexist.

People on the right do what they do for God, their family, and then their community.
Conservatives know poverty or global inequality did not motivate Osama bin Laden and the San Bernardino terrorists to do what they did – it was radical Islamic terrorism.

The narrative on the left is that Americans are too stupid to live their own lives and that the government leaders and bureaucrats know better.
Also, the left sees terrorism as a result of global inequality caused by free markets.
President Obama doesn’t want to call terrorism for what it is because it doesn’t advance the liberal socialist agenda.
The left blames terrorism on America’s capitalism, freedom and liberty.
Calling out terrorism distracts from the propaganda that America’s capitalism and freedom are to blame.

For conservatives to fight back effectively against the liberal agenda, they have to understand this liberal belief system which is their religion with big government as their savior.

The Real Face Of Santa Claus

According to scientific analysis and computer models, Saint Nicholas, the 4th century Bishop of Myra who Santa Claus is based on, would have looked a bit different than the Nordic woodsman of popular culture and more like a 4th century Byzantine Bishop.
St. Nicholas’ remains are buried in the crypt of the Basilica di San Nicola in Bari, Italy. These bones were temporarily removed when the crypt was repaired during the 1950s. At the Vatican’s request, anatomy professor Luigi Martino from the University of Bari, took thousands of minutely-detailed measurements and x-ray photographs (roentgenography) of the skull and other bones.
Professor of forensic pathology at the University of Bari, Francesco Introna, knew advancements in diagnostic technique could yield much more from the data gathered in the 1950s. So in 2004 he engaged expert facial anthropologist, Caroline Wilkinson, then at the University of Manchester in England, to construct a model of the saint’s head from the earlier measurements.
Using this data, the medical artist used state-of-the-art computer software to develop the model of St. Nicholas. The virtual clay was sculpted on screen using a special tool that allows one to “feel” the clay as it is molded. Dr. Wilkinson says, “In theory you could do the same thing with real clay, but it’s much easier, far less time-consuming and more reliable to do it on a computer.”

Short And To The Point

WOW! This is short and to the point.

Lamenting the president’s recent focus on climate change at the COP21 summit in Paris, Glen Beck addressed Obama on his radio program in the wake of Wednesday’s deadly massacre in San Bernadino, CA.

“Mr. President, I say this with as much respect as you deserve,” Beck began. “Screw global warming.”

“What the hell is wrong with you?” he asked. “If you actually believe that global warming is the biggest problem we face, with terror all over the world, and 18 trillion dollar debt––nine of which is yours––no real allies left that trust us, riots in our streets, riots on our university campuses, race relations worse than I’ve seen since the 1960’s, and a distrust of our fellow Americans unlike anything I’ve ever seen, you, sir, are either delusional or you’re the dumbest son-of-a-bitch on the planet.”
